A LETTER TO PONYBOY
Dear Ponyboy:
This is Randy, I think you know me maybe. I'm a soc. I heard you say that socs' problems are, "good grades, good cars, good girls, madras, and Mustangs and Corvairs." Actually, our socs' problems aren't confined like this.
Although sometimes we seems arrogant and unfriendly. We treat and jump greasers for fun; We pretend cool to show an upper class from others; We care about grade and get good girls. But it doesn't mean we don't have feelings. We are living in the same world but different social groups. Everyone of us has the things which they care about. Your greasers are emotional, but our emotion just shows inside. If one of us gets hurt or dies unfortunately, we'll feel sick and terrible. Like last time, Johnny killed Bob. We couldn't stand that. We are a group, like a family, we don't want to lose anyone of us. So we have to fight back for Bob. In fact, we don't really like fights. Socs are sophisticated——cool to point of not feeling anything. Sometimes I'll catch myself jumping a greaser, and I realize that I don't mean half of what I'm saying. I don't think it's cool, but I am just doing it.
I don't want you to misunderstand us, I will say sorry to the terrible things we did. The greasers and socs actually have similarities. We all like movies and popcorns. We have the tendency to fight. We are willing to face challenges from the nature. And most importantly, both greasers and socs have the capacity to see sunsets and appreciate the beauty of nature. That means, we know how to feel the sense of beauty, we want to feel the innocence of the nature and forget about the mess and bitterness of life.
